Mild vs. Major Neurocognitive Disorder (DSM-5)
The key distinction is functional independence, not test score alone. Mild Neurocognitive Disorder involves a noticeable cognitive decline that does NOT significantly interfere with independent living (more effort or compensatory strategies may be needed for complex tasks). Major Neurocognitive Disorder (previously termed "dementia") involves cognitive decline severe enough to interfere with independence in everyday activities, requiring assistance with tasks such as managing finances or medications. MMSE score alone cannot make this distinction — a full functional/ADL assessment is needed.
